Effects of thermal energy harvesting from drinking water

Background
Waternet and PWN are investigating how heat or cold extraction from the WRK raw water pipelines affects drinking water production and ecology in the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes. The aim is to determine limit values for the temperature change within which the thermal energy may be used.
The research follows several steps: a case study near Amstelveen, model calculations and a field trial for ecology.
Facts from the source
- The model study for the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes was completed in early 2025.
- The field trial started in the summer of 2025 and runs until the summer of 2026.
- In the most extreme scenario the water is cooled to 15 °C in summer, a cooling of about 10 °C.
