Chloride forecasting tool Andijk

Chloride forecasting tool Andijk

Background

PWN wanted to know whether the quality of IJsselmeer water at the Andijk intake point can be simulated and forecast, since the IJsselmeer has become saline several times in dry years.

A model was developed that is linked to current measurements and forecasts and gives expectations for a few days to weeks ahead. The reliability of the forecasts still had to be investigated. The model was also used to assess an enlarged storage reservoir (climate buffer).

Facts from the source

  • PWN supplies about 70% of the inhabitants of its service area in Noord-Holland with drinking water from IJsselmeer water.
  • According to the article, an enlarged storage reservoir is effective against periodic salinisation.
