Impact and costs of freshwater shortages

Background

Rijkswaterstaat is having research carried out into how the effects of drought can be expressed as economic damage. This allows the distribution of scarce water to be better substantiated.

Berenschot is developing a calculation instrument for sectors such as agriculture and shipping, together with MB-Water, VISSER waterbeheer and Deltares. The instrument is intended to support the existing advice and does not replace it.

Facts from the source

  • Phase 1 is completed in June 2026 with a basic instrument.
  • The system is ready for use at the end of 2027.
  • Phase 1 includes four damage functions: shipping, agriculture, CO2 and foundations.
